How to Learn Quranic Arabic
Aug 02, 2024How to learn Quranic Arabic?
Learning Quranic Arabic requires dedication and a structured approach.
I will definitely say that you must enroll in a structured course that focuses on Quranic Arabic.
Look for programs like those offered at Ijaada Institute, which are designed specifically for understanding the Quran.
Learn the Arabic Alphabet
Start with mastering the Arabic alphabet, moving on to mastering how to read in Arabic. Trust me, this will save you so much time and stress. At the end of the day Arabic has its own script and it is extremely difficult to try to study Arabic using any other script. Trying to do so will only result in you pronouncing words incorrectly and you will eventually burn out as you won't be able to break down the language using other than the Arabic script.
Grammar and vocabulary
Begin with the basics of Arabic grammar. Learn essential grammatical structures and common vocabulary used in the Quran. Focus on nouns, verbs, and particles that frequently appear in Quranic text.
Memorise Quranic Vocabulary
Create flashcards or use apps to memorise common Quranic vocabulary. Regularly review these words to reinforce your memory.
Understand Arabic Syntax
Study the syntax and sentence structure of Quranic Arabic. Learn how sentences are formed and how to interpret the context of verses.
Practice Recitation and Pronunciation
Practice reciting the Quran with proper Tajweed (rules of pronunciation). Listen to experienced reciters and try to mimic their pronunciation and intonation.
Engage with Quranic Text
If you want to understand the Quran then you have to study it; it’s that simple. You can study as much grammar and vocabulary as you like, but if you don’t actually pick up the Quran and study it diligently you’ll never understand it properly.
When I first started my journey, I bought myself a word for word translation of the Quran and tried to understand every word that I didn’t know. It may seem like a long journey but trust me it pays off. Then, I’d even look at the most famous English translations of the Quran to test my understanding further. No doubt, you have to have some sort of foundation to start a project like this, however, as soon as you reach an intermediate level in Arabic you need to pick up the Quran and get busy!!
Every Muslim must read and analyse passages from the Quran to get a deeper insight into the beauty of the Quran. I would advise to start with shorter surahs (chapters) and gradually move to longer ones. Focus on understanding the meaning of each verse one by one.
I would add that you must get a book of tafseer (explanation of the Quran). My personal favorite is ibn Katheer’s tafseer. The English version is around 10 volumes. It is so important to purchase a book of tafseer as some words go beyond the linguistic meaning. You have to understand them the way the companions of the messenger of Allah (May Allah be pleased with them) did.
Join a study group or find a language partner.
Engaging with others who share the same goal can provide motivation and different perspectives.
Consistent Practice
Dedicate a specific time each day for studying Quranic Arabic. Consistency is key to retaining and understanding the language.
Seek Guidance from Experts
Don’t hesitate to seek guidance from qualified instructors who can provide personalised feedback and support your learning journey.
Which Arabic dialect should I learn to understand the Quran?
One thing I would like to make clear is that to understand the Quran, you should learn Classical Arabic (also known as Quranic Arabic or Fus'ha). This is the language in which the Quran was revealed and is distinct from modern Arabic dialects. Dialects are more useful for everyday conversation and interaction.
Here are some reasons why Classical Arabic is essential for understanding the Quran:
Authenticity: Classical Arabic is the language of the Quran, preserving the original words and meanings as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (May Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him).
Grammar and Syntax: The grammatical rules and syntax of Classical Arabic are essential for accurate interpretation and comprehension of Quranic verses.
Vocabulary: The specific vocabulary used in the Quran often has nuanced meanings that are best understood in the context of Classical Arabic.
In summary, while modern dialects are useful for everyday communication in different Arabic-speaking countries, they differ significantly from Classical Arabic in terms of vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. Therefore, for Quranic studies, it is crucial to focus on Classical Arabic.

The time it takes to learn Quranic Arabic can vary a lot depending on several factors, including your previous experience with the language, your native language, the amount of time you can dedicate to studying, and the intensity of your study program.
However, here are some general guidelines for you to get a rough idea on how long it takes to learn Quranic Arabic:
